About Submarine
Submarines often referred to as subs, are fascinating vessels of the sea. Used for travel and exploration, military and commercial purposes, these vessels have the ability to safely navigate the depths of the oceans undetected by sonar. They require a special team of highly trained personnel in order to operate successfully and have sophisticated machinery that can function in extremely challenging conditions. Many submarines have been created over the years with varying designs and sizes, from as small as a one-person submersible up to giant military vessels. Submarines are fascinating pieces of technology that push the boundaries of our understanding of what is possible beneath the surface of the ocean.
The Early Years of Submarine
The first submarine was created in 1620 by Dutch inventor Cornelius Drebbel. The craft was propelled by oars and used for reconnaissance during military operations. A few decades later, British inventor Robert Hooke designed an improved version with a hand crank mechanism that could be operated underwater for up to three hours at a time. This marked the beginning of years of improvement and technological advances in submarine design.
Submarine Technology Today
Modern-day submarines rely on highly advanced technologies such as nuclear power, sonar systems, and even robotic arms to navigate the depths of the ocean with ease. The US Navy currently operates some of the most sophisticated submarines in existence, such as the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). These vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems and are capable of staying submerged for extended periods of time up to three months at a time! Other countries also have impressive submarines, such as Russia’s Typhoon class vessel, the largest submarine ever built, and China’s Xia class nuclear-powered submersible warship.
Submarine Applications
Aside from military applications, submarines are also used for scientific research and exploration purposes. Scientists use them to study ocean life and map out underwater terrain and geological features for more accurate navigational charts. They can also be used for commercial purposes like transporting goods from one port to another or laying cables across the ocean floor for communications networks.
