About Softball
Many people know that softball is a sport similar to baseball. What they may not know is that the game was first created in 1887 in Chicago by George Hancock. Hancock’s contribution to the game of softball has made him a legend in the world of sports. Here’s a look at his life and his impact on the game of softball.
George Hancock was born in 1862 in Quincy, Illinois. He played baseball and football in high school and college. After college, he began his career as a journalist. It was during his time as a journalist that he came up with the idea for softball.
In 1887, Hancock was covering a baseball game for his newspaper when one of the players hit a fly ball that landed in some mud. The umpire ruled that the player was out because the ball was too dirty to be playable. This ruling made Hancock so angry that he decided to invent a game where the ball would not get dirty and the players would not be put out if they got hit by a fly ball.
Hancock went home and started working on his new game. He created rules and regulations for the game, and he even made a prototype of the ball. He called his new game “softball” because the ball was softer than a baseball.
Hancock’s softball soon caught on with other journalists, and it quickly spread throughout Chicago. From there, it spread to other cities across the United States. Softball became so popular that it was even played in the Olympics!
George Hancock continued to contribute to the game of softball until his death in 1954. His legacy continues on today through the George Hancock Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the history of softball.
